World Languages (LOTE)

Languages Other Than English refers to all language subjects other than English. Our courses are aligned with Advanced Placement Themes: Global Challenges, Contemporary Life, Science and Technology, Personal and Public Identities, Families and Communities, and Beauty and Aesthetics. They are designed to prepare our students for a future of bilingualism and are centered on world cultures. Our main goal in these courses is communication in the language about the theme topics, to provide students with effective communication skills that last a lifetime. Each course unit has structural foundations to enable students to practice their language skills in all modes of communication through activities and the integration of a variety of authentic contexts based on interdisciplinary topics.

In addition, these courses also focus on Intercultural Sensitivity and empathy towards cultures and peoples that differ from our own cultures and beliefs. As an effort to help move our students on the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity continuum to the highest level of ethnorelativism (Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (Bennett, M., 1986, 2013)), our language curricula are written on the foundation of cultures; which, in fact, Milton Bennet's research supports the urgency and importance of language programs and student involvement in these programs.
